I’m Ashley Lucas, also known as Ash. I am 30 years old, I’ve been at Freewheelers for a bit longer than 4 years now. My disability is physical because I’m a wheelchair user, but it doesn’t stop me doing the things I want to achieve. I do Drama on a Monday and Drama on a Tuesday and obviously Music on a Friday.
I joined Freewheelers because I used to go to a Performing Arts College, I was looking for something to do after I left and Freewheelers was the first thing I found. Freewheelers do not concentrate on your disability and the things you can’t do, they concentrate on what you can do.
Freewheelers means the word ‘family’ because even though we can’t always see each other, we are still a massive family. It gives me something to focus on, if I didn’t have Freewheelers, I would be stuck twiddling my thumbs all day.
I have lots of memories, but my main one was when I first started because they embraced me with open arms. I turned to my Mum and said “Wow! I’m going to enjoy it here” and I haven’t looked back since. You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to be a ruler, you can be a circle or a square or a hexagon. They just accept you for you.
