We are seeking trustees to help shape the strategic direction of Freewheelers.
At Freewheelers we are currently in an exciting period of change, and are recruiting Trustees to help guide us into this new world we all find ourselves in. After a challenging couple of years we are seeking individuals to help shape the strategic direction of Freewheelers to ensure we can continue our work for many years to come.
Who are we?
We are a company of people with disabilities, working alongside professional and experienced (disabled and non-disabled) directors, producers, composers and writers, to produce engaging, thought-provoking and highly entertaining theatre, dance, visual art, and film.
We work as a team to fulfil the artistic ambitions of our members and to ensure that all voices are heard. We work to change perceptions of disability.
From our beginnings in 2006 with ten members, we have grown to 95 members who in normal times attend workshops four days a week: Drama (a main Company and a workshop group), Youth Theatre, Dance (3 workshops), Media, Music, and most recently Visual Arts. All our workshops are run by professional artists and our work is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers.
What is the Trustee role and commitment?
The role of Trustee at Freewheelers is a crucial one, ensuring we run the charity in the best interests of our members and staying true to our core vision of creating a world where excellent theatre, dance, film and visual arts are fully accessible by all performers and audiences.
Under normal circumstances the board of Trustees meets four times per year, however during the last 18 months it has been more frequent due to changes surrounding the COVID19 pandemic. Currently we are meeting on Zoom, and envision a hybrid system for the future with at least two meetings per year at our base in Leatherhead.
We are a welcoming bunch, and would like our Trustees to feel engaged in the work of Freewheelers and enjoy activities and the productions. Many of the Trustees volunteer on various projects but there is no expectation to go beyond the duties of those outlined in the relevant Trustee roles and engaging in the Trustee meetings.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for Trustees with a keen interest in the arts, who have the time and willingness to devote to the Freewheelers. Previous Trustee experience is not a requirement, however open mindedness, enthusiasm and the ability to bring professional skills and experience to the board are.
Overall strong professional business experience, knowledge of fundraising, marketing, HR and Governance are skills we are particularly interested in at this time.
If you think that being a Trustee of Freewheelers is for you, please send a covering letter (no more than one side of A4). This should include reasons why you are interested in becoming a Trustee, what you feel you can contribute to the work of Freewheelers and the names of two referees.
We can offer access support at any point in the process. If you have access needs, just let us know.
