We are a company of people with disabilities, working alongside professional and experienced (disabled and non-disabled) directors, producers, composers and writers, to produce engaging, thought-provoking and highly entertaining theatre, dance, visual art, and film.

We work as a team to fulfil the artistic ambitions of our members and to ensure that all voices are heard. We work to change perceptions of disability.

From our beginnings in 2006 with ten members, we have grown to 95 members who in normal times attend workshops four days a week: Drama (a main company and a workshop group), Youth Theatre, Dance (3 workshops), Media, Music, and most recently Visual Arts. All our workshops are run by professional artists and our work is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers.

What is the Volunteer role and commitment?

Our weekly workshops in Drama, Dance, Media, Music and Art provide opportunities for disabled people to learn, work creatively and perform in ambitious and thought-provoking productions that move, inspire and engage audiences.

The role of Volunteers at Freewheelers is crucial. Working as a team with skilled drama practitioners in a fun and supportive environment, we use drama games and exercises to develop skills in acting, movement and voice.

WHO ARE FREEWHEELERS

Freewheelers is delighted to have been presented The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK.

Created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of The Queen’s coronation, this is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise the outstanding work that they undertake in their communities.

In 2017 the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael More-Molyneux, presented Freewheelers with our award; we were one of 187 charities, social enterprises, and voluntary groups to receive the award during that year.

Make a difference!
As a volunteer you learn that it isn’t about you at all. The wonderful thing is your contribution does matter though, as by offering assistance to others you can help them bring things out in themselves that they may not be able to otherwise with other methods.
— Ashley, Volunteer
